Catharina De Backer is een aantal jaar na het overlijden van haar moeder opgenomen door de Commissie van Burgerlijke Godshuizen, de voorganger van het huidige OCMW. Ze is geregistreerd als een ‘verlaten kind’. Als bijlage vind je haar registratie. Er staat te lezen dat:


 


Catharina geboren is in Gent op 9/12/1857


haar moeder Maria Deschuyter gestorven is op 22/08/1860


Catharina binnengebracht is door haar tante, ook Catharina De Backer genoemd wonende in de Kerkstraat 322, op 12/09/1868


Op 15/09/1868 is betaald aan de voedster van het OCMW voor 3 dagen voeding


daarna is Catharina geplaatst in een ‘pleeggezin’ bij weduwe van Karolus Torch te Etichove (Etikhove, nabij Maarkedaal)


Deze weduwe kreeg een vergoeding van de Commissie van Burgerlijke Godshuizen voor het opnemen van een verlaten kind, je ziet de betalingen


aan de rechterkant zie je wanneer er kledij voorzien is voor Catharina, zoals ook voor haar 1ste communie in 1870.


Onderaan lees je dat Catharina na maart 1872 ‘afgedankt’ is


 


We kunnen op basis van deze feiten aannemen dat:


-          Catharina na de dood van haar moeder nog een aantal jaar bij haar tante is kunnen blijven, tenzij ze in een weeshuis geplaatst is dat niet van de Commissie van Burgerlijke Godshuizen was


-          ze op haar 11de toch geplaatst is in een pleeggezin, de reden hiervoor weten we niet


-          ze nog  tot haar 14de bij weduwe Karolus Torch is kunnen blijven


-          ze daarna afgedankt is: dit wil zeggen dat ze niet meer in het pleeggezin kon blijven, aangezien de vergoedingen stopten op een bepaald moment (in die tijd werd 14 jaar, soms zelf 12 jaar in andere periodes, als ‘volwassen’ beschouwd, en moesten de kinderen voor zichzelf kunnen zorgen). We zien dat sommige kinderen toch in het pleeggezin konden blijven, zonder vergoedingen, maar dit was in Catharina haar geval niet zo.
