Notes about Nicolaes Stochius

De calvinistische Nicolaes Stochius werd in 1556 rector der Latijnsche school te Leiden, maar toen de Spanjaarden in aantocht waren vluchtte hij vanwege zijn godsdienstige gezindheid eerst naar Nijmegen. In 1567 werd hij rector van de plaatselijke school in de stad Essen.
Na het Ontzet van Leiden in 1574 keerde hij terug naar Leiden en werd in 1576 rector van de heropende Latijnse school. Hij was zeer bekwaam en onder hem kwam de school tot bloei.

Nicloaes was bevriend met Justus Lipsius en enkele bekende studenten die bij hem en later zijn weduwe in de kost kwamen waren Symon Stevin en Carolus Clusius, de grote plantkundige.
