Van Rütenbrock naar de veenkoloniën in Nederland

Zoals in de voorgaande paragrafen is beschreven wordt het voor de boeren in Duitse veenkoloniën in het Emsland, door de aard van de boekweitcultuur, steeds moeilijker om voldoende nieuwe vruchtbare gronden voor het verbouwen van boekweit te verkrijgen. De ontginning van de Groninger veenkoloniën biedt daarentegen volop nieuwe mogelijkheden. Veel Duitsers trekken naar dit nabijgelegen nog te ontginnen gebied. Gunstig hiervoor is een wet die in 1840 in Nederland van kracht wordt Deze wet kent vrijstelling van grondbelastingen toe in het geval van landontginning en het bouwen van woningen op woeste gronden. Juist in dat jaar vestigen veel kolonisten zich in dit gebied, waaronder veel Duitsers.

In 1845 zijn er reeds een aantal personen uit Duitsland eigenaar op de Horsten:
