Juan II gaf hem zijn titels van Markies van Sanillana en Real de Manzanares.

Na de dood van zijn echtgenote verliet hij het hof en wijde zich aan de litteratuur.

Zijn werken werden uitgegeven in 1566 te Alcala, en werden opnieuw uitgegeven in 1852
door Amador de Los Rios. De Markiez van Santillano zocht zijn inspiratie bij de
provinciaalse dichters.

Hij heeft Boccacio, Petrarque en Dante nagebootst en vertaald.
Zijn toon dichten over de val van de belangrijkste militair van het land, de Luna, en zijn gedicht over de zeeslag van Ponza 1435 worden als meesterwerken.

Tevens voerde hij de
sonnet ( vorm van dichten in het kwatrijnen ) in het Spaanse litteratuur.
