Bij de aanleg van de riolering in de Kerkstraat te Wamel werden in 1970 tegenover de ‘Kloosterhof’ over een afstand van 30 meter bakstenen funderingsresten aangetroffen. Het waren stenen van 28 x 12 x 6 cm. Waarschijnlijk betrof het de noordelijke gevel van een rond 1445 gesticht Clarissenklooster. In 1661 bevestigt Paus Pius II het bezit van het klooster ‘St. Clara’ te Wamel aan de Clarissen. Tijdens de regering van hertog Arnold van Gelre (overleden in 1473) schrijft de abdis van ‘Clarekamp’, Bertha van Riemsdijk, ‘een drietal brieven naar de hertog waarin ze protesteert tegen de schaking van een van haar mede zusters. Ida, de 17 jarige dochter van Hendrik Gijsbertsoon wordt met geweld ontvoerd door een invloedrijke jongeman genaamd Gadert Eegenssoon.
