Marretje's man Jaap van Arissie dronk zoveel, dat zijn eerste vrouw van ellende stierf.Marretje wilde niet hetzelfde lot ondergaan. Zij had immers tien kinderen om voor te zorgen.

In haar wanhoop, heeft zij, tegen haar bedoeling in, haar man met een slag gedood. Op advies van de pastoor werd als doodsoorzaak opgegeven: "ín dronkenschap gevallen en omgegeven."

Afstammelingen zeggen echter dat zijn zoon Klaas zijn vader heeft vermoord, en dat Marretje de schuld op zich nam.

Klaas was op dat moment twaalf jaar oud.
