Als bisschop Hardbert in 1150 sterft, gedragen de opvolgers van Ludolf, zijn zonen Volker en Rudolf, zich dan ook hoe langer hoe meer als onafhankelijke heren. Vandaar dat in 1182 bisschop Boudewijn van Holland besluit hen tot de orde te roepen door de vechttoren te belegeren en een hardnekkige verdediging in te nemen. De stad wordt daarbij totaal verwoest. De bisschop stelt vervolgens als nieuwe kasteelheer graaf Otto van Bentheim aan. De verdreven Heren van Coevorden berusten echter niet.
