Wehkamp was begonnen in het familiebedrijf in de Herenstraat in Slagharen. Al spoedig moest er een nieuwe schuur van 8 x 15 meter worden aangebouwd. En daarbij zou het niet blijven. Binnen de kortste keren werd het arbeidsterrein van de regionale familiezaak te klein. Wehkamp, onderwijzer vanorigine, beschikte over een groot verkooptalent en had bovendien Amerikaanse voorbeelden bij de hand. De catalogus van de Amerikaanse groothandel Sears lag altijd op zijn bureau. Daaruit haalde hij zijn ideeën voor nieuwe producten en werkwijzen. Het postorderbedrijf was geboren.  Met de omzet nam ook het aantal personeelsleden in hoog tempo toe. In 1952 waren er vier medewerkersen bedroeg de omzet 200.000 gulden. In 1956 liep de omzet al tegen de 2.000.000 gulden en waren er 25 personeelsleden. Het was het jaar waarin hij besloot zich terug te trekken uit de manufacturenzaak en alleen met de postorderverkoop door te gaan. Hij verhuisde naar Dedemsvaart, omdat de gemeente Hardenberg, waarbinnen Slagharen lag, hem niet wilde toestaan daar een grote hal te bouwen. Die zou op het industrieterrein in Hardenberg moeten komen. Bovendien werden hem in Dedemsvaart gunstige voorwaarden geboden en waren daar via de
