Notes about Charlotte de Bourbon-Montpensier

Een comissie van geestelijken gaf Willem van Oranje het recht om een andere vrouw te nemen, gezien het gedrag van zijn vrouw Anna van Saksen.

Een maand na haar geboorte wordt Charlotte toevertrouwd aan haar tante Louise de Longwy de Givry, de Abdis van Jouarre. Als zij 13 is overlijdt haar tante en moest zij in strijd met het canonieke recht gedwongen de abdij in te gaan en werd op 17 maart 1559 geïnstalleerd als Abdis.

In de jaren ging zij steeds meer voelen voor de hervorming en vlucht dan ook in januari 1572 naar Heidelberg naar het paleis van de calvanistische keurvorst Frederik III van Palts.

Haar streng katholieke vader is woedend en verbreekt alle contacten met haar. Het zal jaren duren voordat vader en dochter zich verzoenen. In 1575 gaat Marnix van St. Aldegonde (1540-1598) naar Heidelberg om uit naam van Willen van Oranje te onderhandelen over een huwelijk met Charlottte. Charlottes beschermheer keurvorst Frederik III van Palts had aan Oranje het aanzienlijke bedrag van fl 150.000 voor zijn oorlog had geleend. Marnix van St. Aldegonde was eerder in dienst geweest van de keurvorst en trad nu op als de zakenwaarnemer van Charlotte.

Na het huwelijk verblijft het echtpaar regelmatig in Antwerpen waar Charlotte vier dochters ter wereld brengt.

Nadat Willem van Oranje vogelvrij was verklaard door Filips II en er een prijs op zijn hoofd stond wordt het paar geteisterd door aanslagen. Charlotte de Bourbon-Montpensier, overlijdt op 5 mei 1582 te Antwerpen.

Zij stierf kort na de de aanslag op Prins Willem van Oranje-Nassau (18-03-1582) door Jean Jaureguy.

Prins Willem van Oranje-Nassau trouwde met Charlotte de Bourbon-Montpensier, waarschijnlijk om financiele redenen.
