Met 121.754 inwoners is Leiden, naar inwoneraantal gemeten, na Rotterdam, Den Haag en Zoetermeer de vierde gemeente van Zuid-Holland.
Het aan elkaar vast gebouwde stedelijk gebied van Leiden (waar Oegstgeest, Voorschoten en Leiderdorp bij gerekend worden) telt 195.916 inwoners. Met 5524 inwoners per vierkante kilometer is het sinds 2014 de dichtstbevolkte gemeente van Nederland.
De Sleutelstad, zoals de bijnaam van de stad, verwijzend naar het stadswapen, luidt, heeftde oudste universiteit van Nederland.
Leiden ligt in het noorden van de provincie Zuid-Holland, ongeveer 45 km zuidwestelijk van Amsterdam en ongeveer 18 km noordoostelijk van Den Haag.
