Gehuwd op 29-jarige leeftijd op 19-11-1873 te Kloosterburen. Janwillem Sandker schrijft: Herman is een vermogend man. De scheepsbouwerij is ten einde en de hij is directeur eigenaar van een strokartonfabriek.


Terwijl de neef Freerk investeert in de strokarton, investeren Berend Berends en Hermannnus Berends Drenth als eerste ondernemers in Oude Pekela in de aardappelmeelindustrie. Harmannus Berends investeert, samen met enkele andere investeerders, in een asfaltpapier fabriek. Zijn zoon Bernardus Frederik wordt er aangesteld als directeur.


Er is voldoende geld voorhanden voor verdere financiering. Zo wordt er eveneens geinvesteerd in de opkomende turfwinning.



Harmannus Berends koopt stukken veen in o.a. het dorp Schnungsdorf. Dit dorp wordt opgericht bij de ontginning van de turfgebieden in 1877, en de familie Drenth investeert ook. Vader Herman Berent zorgt voor de financiering. Het turfgebied dat de familie gaat ontginnen wordt genoemd naar de moeder Johanna Tobina Wortelboer; Johannaveen. De zonen Leo en Herman zetten de zaak voort tot ver in de 20ste eeuw. Het is dan een groot bedrijf geworden


Omdat vader Herman Berend de financier is van alle aktiviteiten doet Theodor Bernard Kloppenborg mee in de erfenis van het vermogen dat is opgebouwd.
