The Pothoven family originated in Holland. Hendrik Pothoven (b. 1799) was born in Holland and married Teunisje Krukland (1805-1890). They were the parents of Otto Pothoven (1839-1900). Otto married Martha DeBruin and, later, Anna. He was the father of at least nine children. He settled in Pella, Iowa. Descendants live in Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina and other parts of the United States.
