      Den Helder - ,, Mijn opa was mij maatje. We gingen vaak samen jutten. Hij leerde mij de typisch Helderse jutterslimheid. Als je mijn opa zocht was hij op de Rijkswerf te vinden, hij werkte daar als sjouwer. Klaas Swart was zijn naam. Hij was een grote en sterke vent. Het werk als sjouwer was een van de laagste beroepen op de werf. Mijn opa verdiende dus niet al te veel geld. Op een slimme manier wist hij vaak toch nog wel een extraatje te verdienen.”

       

      Jutten

       

      ,,Hij deed dat simpelweg door te jutten. Hij ging dan op zoek naar aangespoelde spullen die hij nog kon verpatsen. Opa vertelde mij eens dat hij een keer urenlang op een duin heeft gelegen om een aanspoelende kist ‘binnen te halen’. Omdat het lang duurde vanwege de gevende en nemende golven bleef hij op het duin liggen. Als hij op het strand zou gaan staan, zouden er misschien meer mensen die kist zien en had hij de buit moeten delen. Nu wachtte hij rustig af. Toen de kist eenmaal op het zand lag, zette hij een sprintje in. Uit het niets kwamen er toen twee andere mannen, die pakten de kist en mijn opa heeft dus nooit geweten wat er in zat.”

       

      Zeeschuim

       

      “Het ging dus niet altijd goed, dat jutten. Maar vaak ook wel. Toen ik nog een jong jochie was, het moet in de jaren vijftig zijn geweest, nam mijn opa me vaak mee als het had gestormd. Dan gingen we op het strand op zoek naar zeeschuim. Dat was dan allemaal aangespoeld. We verzamelden die dingen en namen ze mee naar de stad. Daar verkochten we ze voor een dubbeltje. Hadden we weer een extra plakje kaas op brood. Zo ging dat in die tijd.”

       

      Eieren

       

      ,,Ik heb veel gehad aan de lessen van mijn opa. Toen ik wat ouder werd ging ik zelf ook jutten, maar dan net even anders. Ik kocht goedkoop een zooitje eieren bij een boer, kookte ze en verkocht ze op de werf aan de marinemannen. Dat leverde een mooi zakcentje op. Toen ik als iets ouder jochie als krantenbezorger werkte, kon ik van de uitgeverij gratis de resten papieren krijgen. Dat deed ik natuurlijk. Bij mijn vader op zijn werk, hij was conciërge op een school, kon ik het papier snijden en bestempelen. Zo maakte ik kerstkaartjes. Die bracht ik dan rond bij de mensen en daar kreeg ik weer centen voor. Niemand die dat toen al deed. Ik kreeg er zelfs nog gezeur door met de directie van de krant!”
