. He attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell for two years, then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1964. Following training at Lackland Air Force Base at San Antonio, Texas, and Amarillo Military Training Center at Amarillo, Texas, he served two years at Clark Air Base, Philippines. From 1966 to 1968, he served in Vietnam. During a brief furlough between tours in Vietnam, he married Sharon Kuyper in July 1967. Following his second Vietnam tour, they relocated to McChord Air Force Base near Tacoma, Wash., and later Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, where he completed military service.
