Notes about Dena VEDDERS

Married at the age of 15 on 31-08-1885 in New Holland (S.Dakota) to Gerrit Likkel E died 1931 in USA.
They got 13 children. The parents of Gerrit Likkel also lived in Ommen; he was the only son together with one sister. Their mother died when the two children were young, however father Likkel remarried after a few years. In many Dutch homes was talked about emigration; so it was decided that Gerrit would go to America as a sort of forrunner for the rest of the family. Gerrit crosst the Atlantic to find a better living. From New York he went to LeMars (Iowa) by train and worked on a farm near Maurice not far from Sioux Center (Iowa). Here he worked about two years to have enough money to let come his parents and sister. The family was reunited and moved to New Holland (S Dakota) where the Likkel family staked out a homestead. After the dead of Gerrit mother Dena followed her children to Lynden (Washington).
