Elsie was born June 20, 1920, in Moxee, WA to John and Matilda (Jongejan) Huibregtse, fourth child of six. She was raised and schooled in Moxee with summer sojourns to Whidbey Island with Uncle Mead and Aunt Jennie Sweeney to give her mother some relief from raising her younger twin brothers. She graduated from the Moxee School District and attended Yakima Business College while working as a clerk in a dime store. After graduation, Mom worked 8 years as Head Cashier for the Westside J.C.Penny Co.
