Notes about Harmen Jan WISSINK

The family lived in Voorst, Gelderland, the Netherlands. When they immigrated to the United States of America in 1868, they settled in Greenleafton, York, Minnesota. When land became available in Sioux County, Iowa, for homesteaders, they moved further west. Families coming with them were the Jacob Kosters, Gysbert Van Beeks, Rensinks, Wesselinks, Kempers, Te Grotenhuis, Doorninks, and Kleuvers. They lived in a sod hut, then a little shanty house. Life was hard and survival was a day to day process. They had to go to the Rock River (about 15 miles west of Sioux Center, Iowa) to get wood for building and burning.
From "The Story of Sioux County" (page 77) by Charles L. Dyke. (Copyright 1942): Later, when the first Sioux Center church was built, Wissink moved they pay for it in cash, and the motion was carried. Wissink was a kind and genial man who always wore wooden shoes, even to church. For the latter purpose they were scrubbed and polished until they fairly shone.
Friday passed away to Carmel in the age of more than 80 years the old gentleman H. J. Wissink De overlene was also an of the most old nederzetters in this colony and little were there in this surroundings that him knew not. Its material oyerschot became Monday to Carmel: to earth ordered from out the Geref- church there.
