Notes about Katheryn VREUGDENHIL

Katharine "Kay" Matter, age 84 of Lynden, passed away peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, July 24, 2009. The daughter of Cornelius and Tillie (Bos) Vreugdenhil, Kay was born in Harrison, South Dakota on July 19, 1925 and moved with her family to the Lynden area in 1937. She married Henry Matter in Lynden on August 18, 1943, then moved to Sumas where they raised their seven sons. She was preceded in death by Henry in 1996 and a son, Ronald, in 1981. Kay's life was her family. A home maker, she was a loving, devoted wife and mother who enjoyed baking, sewing, crocheting and gardening. She also sold Avon products for more than ten years. Kay was a member of Sumas Christian Reformed Church, where she was involved in Ladies Bible Studies, and after moving to Lynden, became and member of Third Christian Reformed Church. Mrs. Matter is survived by her daughter-in-law, Johanna Matter of Seattle, sons Richard (Diane) Matter of Quesnel, BC., Dennis (Arlene) Matter of Woodinville, WA., Larry (Yoshie) Matter of Bellevue, WA., Robert (Mary) Matter, Duane (Jacki) Matter, Glenn Matter and special friend Peggy DuPriest all of Lynden; nineteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; sisters Jessie DeVries of Atascadero, CA. and Wilma Kelln of Bellingham; sisters-in-law Harriet Vreugdenhil and Frieda and husband Herman VanderMey of Lynden and numerous other relatives. Besides her husband and son, Kay was preceded in death by brothers John and wife Cora Vreugdenhil and Jake Vreugdenhil and in-laws, Dirk DeVries, Allen Kelln, Paul and Harriet Matter and Bill and Marguerite Dawson. Visitation hours will be from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden. Burial will be at 12:15 p.m. on Monday, August 10, in Monumenta Cemetery followed by memorial funeral services at 1:00 p.m. in Third Christian Reformed Church, 6th & Liberty Sts. in Lynden with Pastor Homer Wigboldy officiating. Memorials in Kay's name may be made to Ninos Tres Rios: Children's Education & Disabilities Assistance in El Salvador; 1221 148th Ave. NE, Bellevue, WA. 98007-4043 or Lynden Christian Schools, 417 Lyncs Dr., Lynden, WA. 98264.
