Baldwin became recognized as Count of Hainault in 1099. By 1118, he t ook up arms with Louis VI of France and Fulk V of Anjou, on the behal f of William Clito, against Henry I of England, and joined the others in an attack on Normandie. In September 1118, he received a head woun d at a tournament and was mortally wounded while attacking the pays o f Talou and returned to Flanders as an invalid. At the time of his de ath, he was a newly professed monk. His successor was Charles 'the Go od' who kept the peace with Henry.

Boudewijn III (overleden 1120), was graaf van Henegouwen van 1098 tot aan zijn dood. Als zoon van Boudewijn II van Henegouwen en van Ida van Leuven, volgde hij in 1098 zijn vader op, aanvankelijk onder het regentschap van zijn moeder (tot ± 1103). Net als zijn vader poogde hij het graafschap Vlaanderen te heroveren. Daartoe trachtte hij o.m., zij het vergeefs, het conflict om Kamerijk tussen de Vlaamse graaf Robrecht II en de Duitse keizer Hendrik IV uit te buiten.

Hij trouwde rond 1107 met Yolanda van Gelre (overleden 1131), dochter van Gerard I van Gelre. Toen Boudewijn VII van Vlaanderen in 1119 kinderloos overleed, probeerde Boudewijn III andermaal zijn rechten op de Vlaamse troon te laten gelden, maar kon niet beletten dat deze toekwam aan Karel de Goede, een kleinzoon van Robrecht I. Bij zijn dood liet hij zijn weduwe met vier minderjarige kinderen achter. Zijn oudste zoon Boudewijn volgde hem op.

Baldwin was recognized as Count of Hainault after his mother's returnfrom Rome. He died 1120. Robert le Jeune, Count of Flanders, found whenhe returned from the Crusade that his father had given to Baldwin III theChateau of Douai with its dependencies. Not daring to retrieve it byforce, he proposed to give Baldwin in marriage to a niece of his wife,and exacted as surety the possession of the Chateau of Douai. When thisniece Adelaide of Savoy, later Queen of France, was presented to Baldwinhe found her so ugly that he refused to marry her, and thus forfeitedDouai. He married Yolande, daughter of Gerald, Count of Guelders, and hadBaldwin IV, Count of Hainault, Yolande, Gertrude and Richilda.
