    Op 3/10/1944 hebben de gealieerden Westkapelle gebombardeerd en Walcheren onder water gezet om de Duitse positie te verzwakken. Er vielen 158 doden. De grootste ramp vond echter plaats in molen de Roos. De uitgang van de schuilkelder onder de molen raakte geblokkeerd bij het bombardement en de mensen die hier een veilig heenkomen hadden gezocht verdronken. Op 8 November werden de Duitsers door de Canadezen verdreven en was Walcheren vrij.
