Gerrit was landbouwer aan de Kon.Wilhelminaweg 47 hoek Kranenburgsestraat.
Kort na hun huwelijk kwam Operatie Market Garden met op Bredeweg veel droppings van parachutisten, t.g.v. daarvan moesten zij evacueren naar Heumen waar Dinie geboren werd. Later zijn zij ook nog in Wychen geweest. zie de brief en briefkaart no 7 en 8.
Na terugkomst herhaaldelijk in de schuilkelder, zijn vader verloor het leven toen hij vanuit de schuilkelder keek of alles veilig was. Hij werd bijna onthoofd door de kogelregen.
