    Les Landreciens ont bien raison de s'équiper autant
    que possible, car de nouvelles épreuves les
    attendent. La révolution française éclate en 1789.
    En avril 1792, la guerre avec l'Autriche commence.
    Très exactement deux ans plus tard, en avril 1794,
    les troupes autrichiennes sont devant Landrecies.
    Depuis les sièges du XVIème et du XVIIème siècle,
    les techniques militaires ont beaucoup évolué, et la
    ville n'y est pas forcément préparée.
    Du 17 au 24 avril, les pauvres Landreciens subissent
    un déluge meurtrier de tirs d'artillerie qui ravage
    la ville. D'après les témoignages de l'époque, il
    ne restait pas dix maisons intactes à l'issue du
    bombardement. Tous les historiens s'accordent à
    souligner la résistance héroïque dont les habitants
    ont pourtant fait preuve, notamment une certaine
    Marguerite Grumiau, qui a aujourd'hui une rue à son
    nom. La ville finit par tomber, comme d'ailleurs tout
    le Hainaut, aux mains des soldats autrichiens.
    L'occupation sera de courte durée, puisque le
    général Shérer et les troupes révolutionnaires
    réinvestissent la place forte dès le mois de
    juillet.
