Notes about Rochus Arysz Schelling

De naam Rochus komt van de franse heilige Saint Rochus. Deze werd in ca 1295 te Montpellier geboren uit vrome ouders. Hij werd vroeg wees, schonk een groot deel van zijn vermogen aan de armen en ging in 1317 als pelgrim naar Rome, verpleegde onderweg veel pestlijders eb werd op de treugreis in 1320 zelf door de pest aangetast en te Piacenza maar genas op wonderbaarlijke wijze. Op de huizen in het Spaand-Franse grensgebeid bracht men vaak de letters VSR (Vive Saint Rochus) aan om besmettelijke ziekten af te weren. de naam bereikte ons land inde 16e eeuw en werd enige tijd vrij populair.
