Notes about Dirk Dooremans

Op zaterdag 9 december onthulde Wethouder Jan-Willem Stoop een nieuw straatnaambord van de dokter Dooremansstraat in Lage Zwaluwe. Er staat nu informatie op het bord wat de menslievende dokter voor de Zwaluwse gemeenschap deed. Erfgoedvereniging Heerlijkheid Hooge en Lage Zwaluwe tekende zijn verhaal op.
Dirk Dooremans werd geboren op 27 december 1884 in Dordrecht en werd assistent-huisarts van dokter Aaltsz in Lage Zwaluwe. Hij nam de praktijk over begin 1914 en trouwde later met een Zwaluwse wijkverpleegster; mw. van Buuren.
Gratis hulp aan arme patiënten
De menslievendheid van Dooremans kom je niet snel tegen. Vaak hielp hij gratis patiënten die krap bij kas zaten. Dooremans deed dit omdat hij wist dat mensen het moeilijk hadden en grote gezinnen te onderhouden. Acht of negen kinderen in een gezin waren geen uitzondering. Toch deden dorpelingen moeite om de dokter te betalen. Soms schakelden mensen de notaris in om het verschuldigde bedrag bij de dokter te krijgen. Hij heeft vele Zwaluwnaars op de wereld geholpen zonder dat hij hiervoor betaald werd. Dat lag niet aan de ouders, wanneer hij volgens aankondiging voor een laatste bezoek zou langskomen, stonden zij klaar met hun geld, het vaste bedrag van 10 gulden. Maar dan kwam hij juist niet meer en liet bewust verstek gaan.
Door het vuur
Dooremans ging letterlijk door het vuur voor zijn patiënten. Om precies te zijn, granaatvuur. Op een dag in 1944 moest hij naar een patiënt in Hooge Zwaluwe. Hoewel Brabant al was bevrijd, lag dit gebied in die tijd regelmatig onder vuur vanuit het nog bezette Holland. Ook op die dag werd de regio beschoten. Toch reed hij met zijn motorfiets naar Hooge Zwaluwe. Bij de hervormde kerk aldaar raakte hij gewond toen een granaat insloeg. De verwondingen door de scherven waren zo erg dat Dooremans naar het ziekenhuis in Breda werd gebracht. Daar moest hij enige tijd blijven, maar uiteindelijk kon hij weer terug naar huis en zijn werk voortzetten.
Barmhartige samaritaan
Dooremans overleed op 11 februari 1960. Hij is begraven op de begraafplaats van de Nederlands-Hervormde kerk in Lage Zwaluwe. Inwoners van Hooge en Lage Zwaluwe en Moerdijk zamelden na zijn overlijden spontaan geld in voor een monument voor de dokter. Als blijk van waardering voor zijn menslievendheid: Een beeld dat de Barmhartige Samaritaan voorstelt. Beeldhouwer Hendrik Koreman maakte het beeld.
De dokter Dooremansstraat te Lage Zwaluwe loopt vanaf de Onderstraat tot aan de Wethouder Dubbelmanstraat.
