Clara Schnitzler groeide op in Lövenich, vlakbij Erkelenz. In 1893 trouwde ze met Fritz Stelkens (1861-1928) en kreeg acht kinderen, Clara (1894-1958), Mia (1895-1979), Tini (1897-1980), Therese (1898-1951), Fritz (1899-1977), Annë (1900-1972), Guste (1902-1996) en Paula (1903-1978). Na het overlijden van haar echtgenoot in 1928 bleef zij tot haar dood, samen met haar jongste dochter en diens echtgenoot Otto Bischof (1899-1967), boven de Gaststätte zur Niersbrücke wonen. Tijdens haar leven was zij getuige van het ontstaan van het Duitse Keizerrijk (1871), de Eerste Wereldoorlog (1914-1918), het ontstaan van de Weimarrepubliek (1918), de opkomst van Hitler (1933), de Tweede Wereldoorlog (1939-1945) en het ontstaan van de Bondsrepubliek Duitsland (1949).
