Notes about Johannes Snel

Johannes heeft in zijn jonge jaren, in het Franciscaner klooster gezeten te Baarle Nassau. Hij volgde daar het seminarie tot priester en werkte tijdens deze opleiding in de tuin van het klooster. Hij heeft dit echter niet afgemaakt, omdat hij zich niet meer met de leer van het geloof kon verenigen en is uitgetreden.
Hierna is hij fietsenmaker, kachelsmid enz geworden. Hij solliciteerde bij de Kon.Marine om beroeps te kunnen worden. In verband met een slechte rug werd hij helaas niet aangenomen. Niet lang daarna werden de keuringsregels aanmerkelijk versoepelt i.v.m. de dreiging van een oorlog. Hij werd alsnog aangenomen als machinist en volgde zijn opleiding op het TOKM te Amsterdam. Na de opleiding is hij naar de MOK op Texel overgeplaatst.Toen de Duitsers Nederland binnen vielen is hij op een kotter gevlucht naar Engeland. Na aankomst in Engeland werd hij eerst op een patrouilleboot geplaatst om de in het nauw gedreven militairen op het strand van Duinkerken te evacueren. Tijdens deze akties zijn ze overvaren door een jager en zonk het schip. Als een van de weinige is hij gered en weer naar Engeland gebracht. Daar aangekomen werd hij geplaatst op de O21(onderzeeboot) en heeft daar vele patrouilles mee gevaren als bescherming voor geallieerde schepen, maar heeft ook vele spionage opdrachten uitgevoerd o.a in de wateren rond Indonesie. Toen de O21 noodgedwongen in groot onderhoud moest in de USA is hij overgeplaatst naar de Tromp. Op de Tromp en de O 21 heeft hij vele angstige avonturen beleefd en hier tot tweemaal een medaille voor verdiensten voor gekregen. Als stoker/olieman heeft hij de Kon.Marine verlaten.

Johannes heeft in 1946 het contact met zijn familie (Snel) geheel verbroken. Er zijn weinig gegevens bekend, behalve dat ze in Amsterdam hebben gewoond. In Zuid Afrika krijgt hij in 1941 via het rode kruis bericht dat zijn moeder is overleden. Hij krijgt geen toestemming van de Kon.Marine af te reizen naar Nederland. Op 26 -12-1942 trouwt hij in Kaapstad met Magdalena Botha. Dit huwelijk is slechts van korte duur, omdat ze hem ontrouw bleek te zijn.Op 05-07-1946 wordt dit huwelijk officieel ontbonden. Johannes kreeg een relatie met een vrouw in Sidney, waar hij mee wilde trouwen. Hij moest eerst naar Nederland om zijn scheiding met Magdalena Botha te regelen en toen ontmoette hij Suzanna Bijl waarmee hij op 13-11-1946 te Rotterdam in het huwelijksbootje stapte. De relatie in Sidney ziet Johannes nooit meer terug in Australie. Johannes heeft werk gevonden bij de Maneba meelfabrieken in Delft en later in de Maashaven van Rotterdam. In 1948 heeft hij een baan aanvaard in Bakkum bij het provinciaal ziekenhuis "Duin en bosch" waar hij als machinst aan het werk kon.
