In januari 1725 wordt in een koopmanshuis aan de Leuvehaven in Rotterdam Pieter Johan van Berckel geboren. Op 21 januari vindt de doopplechtigheid plaats in de gereformeerde Grote of St.-Laurenskerk. De vader is Mr. Engelbert van Berckel, die dan als lid·Äô van de vroed- schap de functies bekleedt van kolonel der burgeru en gecommitteerde ter Admiraliteit op de Maze. Als bewindhebber der V.O.C. en - in voorgaande en latere jaren - gedeputeerde ter dagvaart behoort ho tot de meest invloedruke regenten van Rotterdam. Pieters moeder, Theodora Petronella van Hogendorp, is een telg uit het bekende ge- slacht van die naam. Ook haar vader was vroedschap, schepen en burgemeester van Rotterdam en bewindhebber der V.O.C. a).
Bij zijn geboorte heeft Pieter een oudere broer, Willem Wendelius, uit wie een nog levende tak van de familie, en twee zusters, Petronella Geertruid en Ida Hermina Adriana. In oktober 1726 wordt tenslotte de jongste telg Engelbert FrancÀßois geboren.
In 1730 verhuist de familie: vader Engelbert heeftLop 12 mei van dat jaar een groter huis aan de Wijnhaven gekocht.

Pertonella Jacoba is een afstammeling van Piet Johan van Berckel.

Rotterdam 6 nov. 1736, overl. ald. 18 april 1803, dr. van Mr. Franco DanieÀàl du Bois, bewindhebber W.I.C. li4) en Ignatia Maria Visch.
