Graaf van Guines stichtte abdij van Andernes
Boudewijn kiest partij voor Robrecht I van Vlaanderen in diens strijd tegen Richildis van Henegouwen en neemt aan diens zijde deel aan de Slag bij Kassel op 22 februari 1071 tegen Arnulf II de Ongelukkige. De Slag vindt plaats op de noordoostelijke flank van Kasselse berg. Het is een militair treffen om de heerschappij over het graafschap Vlaanderen. Arnulf heeft als oudste zoon van graaf Boudewijn IV recht op de graventitel. Zijn oom, Robrecht, die eveneens aanspraak maakt op de opvolging, beschuldigt Arnulf van tirannie. Arnulf moet in de Slag bij Kassel het onderspit delven, ondanks de steun van een coalitie bestaande uit zijn leenheer, de Franse koning Filips I, zijn oom Willem de Veroveraar, graaf Hendrik II van Leuven en de ridders en steden uit overwegend het Picardische deel van Vlaanderen.
Boudewijn is bekend om zijn moed, wijsheid en zijn voorbeeldige levenswandel. Boudewijn doet in 1084 een pelgrimstocht naar Santiago de Compostella, maar komt ziek terug. Omdat hij zo goed verzorgd wordt in de abdij van Charroux, sticht hij als dank de abdij van Andernes, bij Guines.
