Hij is de oudst bekende voorvader van deze tak van de familie Ritzen en kwam rond 1610 vanuit Geilenkirchen (toendertijd hertogdom Gulik) naar Heerlen kwam en kocht daar landbouwgrond. Mogelijk verwant aan Enken Ritzen (Lutzen) uit Heerlen in de kwartierstaat, die in dezelfde periode voorkomt.
Verklaring van de achternaam Ritzen (Ritt, Richards(on), Richartsz, Reichart, Rijcken): van Richard, "de sterke heerser". Bekende koningnaam in Engeland. De bekendste naamdrager is oud-minister Jo Ritzen, een verrre nakomeling van deze Jacob.
