{geni:about_me} Johan Birnie was born in Djember, East Java. His father was Dutch and his mother Javanese. He was raised in both countries, Indonesia and the Netherlands. He married Albertine Kranenburg, a Dutch woman from Groningen. First they lived in Java, where some of their children were born, and later in the Netherlands where the rest of their children were born. Finally they settled in the city of Groningen where both had family ties.

Johan's family had a tobacco and rubber plantation in Java, and Albertine's family had a cigars factory in Groningen called "Groninger Vlag" thus the relationship between both families.

By the WWII Johan and Albertine had to leave the Netherlands and settled in Brussels. When the war was over, Albertine fell ill with cancer and passed away. She is interred in Brussels. Johan now a widower moved to Los Angeles,California, where he lived until his death.

Johan was an accomplished painter and was able to take lessons with Dutch painters in the years that he spent living in the Netherlands.

While living in California Johan became a friend of the well known American painter Phil Paradise.
