*Coenraad Johannes van Houten (Amsterdam, 15 maart 1801 - Weesp, 1887) was de zoon van Casparus van Houten Sr. Hij volgde zijn vader op als eigenaar van de dan al wereldwijd bekende Nederlandse chocoladefabriek.

*Coenraad van Houten trouwde in 1835 met een naamgenote, Hermina van Houten (geen familie), uit Groningen. In 1850 verplaatste hij zijn productie van een windmolen in Leiden naar een stoomfabriek in Weesp. Hij maakte de fabriek tot een internationaal bekende onderneming en exporteerde chocolade naar Engeland, Frankrijk en Duitsland.

At that time, cocoa beans were ground into a fine mass, which could then be mixed with milk to create a chocolate drink or, with addition of sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla, made into cookies.
