Beroep: Boekhouder, restauranthouder (cafetariabedrijf-broodjeszaak), directeur van een NV.

Max verloor een been bij het bombardement op Rotterdam (mei 1940) en had vanaf juni 1942 een baantje bij de Joodse Raad en werkte in de boekhouding van de afdeling Expositur en dit gaf hem, zijn vrouw Catharina Alter en zoon Alfred Maurits lange tijd bescherming. Het gezin kwam op 3 juli 1943 vanuit Vught in Westerbork terecht. Daar weet hij zich lang uit de transporten te bluffen door een miljoenenhandel in im- en export van vlees te fingeren, waarvoor hij de gegevens uit een Amerikaans tijdschrift haalde.

Uiteindelijk werd het gezin op 15 februari 1944 op transport gesteld naar Bergen-Belsen (D) doch op 23 april 1945 in de trein in Tröbitz (D) bevrijd. In zijn boek 'Het Moordhol Bergen-Belsen' vertelt Max dat de jeugd aldaar baldadig was en snel verwilderde waarop hij onderwijs organiseerde voor zes- tot tienjarigen. Over de laatste fase in de trein in Tröbitz oordeelt Max over zichzelf en zijn medegevangenen n.a.v. het bestelen van stervenden, dat zij geen mensen meer waren, en ‘gemeen, vuil en wild van de honger’.
