Asser records that Alfred's mother-in-law "Edburga of the royal line of Mercia…was a venerable lady and after the decease of her husband, she remained many years a widow, even till her own death"[678]. According to Weir[679], she was perhaps the daughter of Cenwulf King of Mercia but the basis for this speculation is not known. m ÆTHELRED "Mucil" Ealdorman of the Gainas [in Mercia].]
