Notes about Engelke Rops
Het wel en wee van het korps Gestichtswacht
Zoals bekend, werd het korps in de bezettingstijd opgericht. Een tijd, waarin met de grootst mogelijke voorzichtigheid moest worden gemanoeuvreerd om geen problemen te krijgen met de bezettende macht. Dit is ook de reden, waarom er geen brieven of circulaires zijn geschreven over de oprichting.
Wel is bekend, dat de Duitsers welke toen met de leiding van het gevangeniswezen waren belast het de hogere ambtenaren niet moeilijk maakten om vrijstelling van krijgsgevangenschap en arbeidsinzet te verkrijgen voor het personeel.
Bij het eenjarig bestaan van het Korps in juli 1943 werd door de toenmalige secretaris generaal de heer Schriecke een bezoek gebracht aan het Korps. Bij deze gelegenheid was het gehele Korps, plusminus 120 man aangetreden.
De gestichtswachter Hendrik Bethlehem is op 26 februari 1944 door de Sicherheitsdienst gearresteerd. Over Bethlehem is nimmer bericht ontvangen bij het Korps wat of er verder met hem is gebeurd en om welke redenen hij is gearresteerd.
Op 15 december 1944 is de gestichtswachter Pieter Warntje Tuin door een agent van politie uit Assen gearresteerd en overgebracht naar de Sicherheitsdienst te Assen.
Op 16 december 1944 zijn de volgende gestichtswachters door de Sicherheitsdienst en Landwacht, nadat er een hoeveelheid gedropte wapens en munitie en een parachute waren gevonden, gearresteerd:
