Het verlies van de Alphacca
De Alphacca (kapitein Reindert Johannes van der Laan) vertrok uit Kaapstad (Zuid Afrika) op 23 maart 1942, met 67 opvarenden en beladen met koper, vanadium, zink en algemene lading, met bestemming Freetown (Sierra Leone). Het schip voer alleen, zonder begeleiding van oorlogsschepen.
Op 27 maart raakten de eerste, tweede en derde machinist gewond in een ongeluk met een technische installatie aan boord. De tweede machinist overleed op dezelfde dag aan zijn verwondingen, de eerste machinist drie dagen later op 30 maart. Beiden kregen een zeemansgraf.
Op 4 april ontving de Alphacca het bericht dat er een Duitse onderzeeboot in het gebied opereerde, en het schip begon te zigzaggen. Maar om 19.29 uur, kort na zonsondergang, werd de Alphacca in het achterschip geraakt door een torpedo van de U-505 (Kapitän leutnant Axel-Olaf Loewe), die de Alphacca al meer dan zeven uur achtervolgd had. De aanval gebeurde op 150 mijl ten zuiden van Cape Palmas (Ivoorkust). Het schip maakte direct water in het achterschip en begon over de achtersteven weg te zakken. Noodsignalen waren onmogelijk omdat de zendinstallatie defect raakte in de explosie. De bemanning en passagiers gingen van boord in vier reddingboten. Veertien bemanningsleden (waaronder matroos Derks) verloren hun leven tijdens de aanval.
De U-boot kwam boven water en ondervroeg de bemanning in de reddingboten. De overlevenden kregen de koers en afstand naar Cape Palmas, waarna de onderzeeboot wegvoer en de boten koers zetten richting land. De volgende dag, 5 april, overleed een stoker aan zijn verwondingen en kreeg een zeemansgraf.
Op 9 april bereikten alle vier reddingboten de kust, ten oosten van Cape Palmas. Een week later, op 16 april werden de overlevenden opgehaald door het Britse oorlogsschip HMS Hydrangea (K 39) (LtCdr J.E. Woolfenden, RNR) en de Franse FFL Commandant Drogou (K 195) op 16 april. Ze werden naar Freetown gebracht, waar vijf gewonden werden opgenomen in het ziekenhuis op 18 april.
