De Kleine Zusters van de H. Joseph is een congregatie van vrouwen die in 1872 in Heerlen door Petrus Joseph Savelberg is gesticht. De congregatie legt zich toe op actieve bezigheden: gezondheidszorg, onderwijs en huishouden. Tot aan het einde van de twintigste eeuw werkten de Kleine Zusters in ziekenhuizen, inrichtingen en scholen. Zij zorgden voor ouderen, zieken, geestelijk en lichamelijk gehandicapten en kinderen. Zij waren niet alleen in Heerlen en Limburg actief, maar ook in de rest van Nederland en in België. Missiewerk voerde de Kleine Zusters naar China, Indonesië, Nieuw-Guinea, Kenia en Tanzania. Ook daar deden ze vooral aan scholing en ziekenzorg. In tegenstelling tot veel andere congregaties die zochten naar een meer contemplatieve invulling van hun religieuze leven, zijn de Kleine Zusters altijd actief op de maatschappij betrokken geweest. De Nederlandse en Belgische zusters hebben inmiddels allemaal de pensioengerechtigde leeftijd bereikt. In Kenia, Tanzania en Indonesië zijn jonge takken van de congregatie nog volop aan het werk. Nalatenschap: de congregatie telt op dit moment 174 leden in Nederland en België. Er zal in de toekomst echter een moment komen dat ze er niet meer zijn. De meeste zusters zijn nu boven de tachtig. Sinds 1971 zijn er geen vrouwen meer ingetreden. Om hun nalatenschap te waarborgen hebben de zusters verschillende initiatieven ontplooid. Zo is er een documentaire over hen gemaakt (door Annemarie Strijbosch) en is er een boek over de geschiedenis van de congregatie geschreven (door Gabrielle Dorren): 'Met de minsten der Mijnen'. De herinrichting van het oude klooster in de Gasthuisstraat is onderdeel van deze initiatieven.
