Notes about Anna Cornelia Meers

In de jaren rond 1888 op haar 21e is zij gaan werken in het Gesticht van Liefdadigheid, Herengracht 182 te Amsterdam. In mei 1891 is zij toen verhuisd naar Zoeterwoude in het klooster van O.L. Vrouw van Liefde van de Goede Herder van Angers. In 1892, zij was toen 25 jaar, is zij toegetreden tot deze religieuse kloosterorde.

Larenstein was voor de bewoners van Velp een geheimzinnig klooster. Volgens geruchten werd het bewoond door 'gevallen meisjes'.

Ruim tachtig jaar, tussen 1892 tot 1973, dreven de Zusters van de Goede Herder daar aan de rand van Velp een internaat waar duizenden meisjes (in 1932 woonden er bijvoorbeeld maar liefst 335 in getal) onder een onbarmhartig regime werden 'opgevoed'. Het waren wezen, kinderen die om allerlei redenen uit huis waren geplaatst en meisjes die zoals dat heet 'met justitie in aanraking waren geweest'. De details zijn verbijsterend.

Bij hun intrede op Larenstein kregen ze niet alleen 'gestichtskleren' maar ook een andere naam, doorgaans van een katholieke heilige. De ontpersoonlijking werd grondig ter hand genomen. De meisjes wisten niets van elkaars achtergrond en vroegen er ook niet naar (want het was, zoals er een zegt, je enige stukje privacy).

De eerste uren van de dag mochten ze niet met elkaar praten, op het stiekem uitwisselen van adressen stond straf. En die straffen waren niet mis: opgesloten worden in een donkere kast, op je blote knieën knielen in harde grauwe erwten.

Naar huis gingen de kinderen nooit, visite van familie kregen ze zelden en als er al bezoekers kwamen werden deze ontvangen in een kamer met een traliehek dat hen scheidde van de meisjes. En die mochten vooral niet vragen om eens vaker te schrijven: intimiteit was bedreigend voor de orde in het klooster. In de herinneringen overheerst gebrek aan liefde.
