In 1886 is de Waterloostraat dicht bebouwd. Op nummer F 155 (nu nummer 35) woont
Jacobus Gijbertus Amesz, dan kantoorbediende, later boekhouder. Jacobus Amesz (24 j
aar oud) komt uit Gouda naar Rotterdam en trekt bij zijn broer in. Op nummer F 161
vestigt hij zijn boekbinderij. Hij doet het goed want notarissen en andere belangrijke
personen vertrouwen hem het binden van de acten toe. Hij krijgt vraag naar boeken en
zo ontstaat de boekhandel.
In 1892 trouwt hij met Jacoba Maria van Ree, wonend F 2 aan de Oudedijk, tegenover de Hoflaankerk, waarvan haar vader koster is geweest.
Gezin en zaak breiden zich uit en Jacobus huurt in 1895 een nieuw pand aan de Avenue Prins Alexander (in 1900 verandert deze naam in Voorschoterlaan). Achter de winkel werken de boekbinders. Dat werk neemt later af, de boek- en kantoorboekhandel wordt dan belangrijk.
In 1918 moet Jacobus het pand verlaten of kopen. Hij besluit tot het laatste en wordt voor Fl. 18.000,= eigenaar. Weliswaar moet hij het geld lenen, maar wekelijks wordt er afgelost met wat er "over" is na aftrek van een bedrag voor huishouding en zaak. Jacobus Amesz is in veel opzichten een ondernemer: als één der eersten haalt hij gasverlichting in huis en zodra het kan elektriciteit. Telefoon komt zodra mogelijk en het wordt een publieke. Zo trek je ook klanten! 't Zijn trouwens lange dagen: voor dag en dauw bezorgt hij de NRC (toen een ochtendkrant) en de winkel sluit tussen 10 en 12 uur 's avonds pas.
Inmiddels zijn zoon Koos en dochter Gretha in het bedrijf opgenomen, gevolgd door schoonzoon Freek Roodhorst in de twintiger jaren. Deze laatste voor de administratie. In december 1934 overlijdt Jacobus (ruim 71 jaar oud).
Onder leiding van de weduwe Amesz zet het genoemde drietal de zaak voort, gesteund door de boekhoudkundige bezigheden van Jaap, die een grote adviserende stem had als oudste zoon en als kundige medewerker bij Helders (ijzerwaren).
Door de moeilijke crisijaren en de Tweede Wereldoorlog heen houdt het bedrijf stand. In 1945 zijn de planken nagenoeg leeg, maar het herstel zet in. De weduwe Amesz maakt dit niet meer mee, zij overlijdt in 1946.
Zoon Koos sterft in 1955. Een hele slag, want hij was de motor. Maar de overgebleven firmanten geven het niet op. In juni 1956 komt Gijs Roodhorst in het bedrijf. Sedert 1951 werkte hij in boek- en kantoorboekhandels en behaalde intussen de benodigde diploma's. Inmiddels is ook Freek Roodhorst overleden (1974).
Mej. A.M. Amesz, die met haar zusters het winkelwerk deed, volgt van verre het wel en wee van de zaak, die haar vader begon.
