HEEMSTRA (Georg Sigismund van), geb. Dec. 1668, overl. 16 Sept. 1709, zoon van Feye (5) en van Tjits van Aysma. Hij trad, als zoovelen uit zijn geslacht, in militairen dienst en onderscheidde zich overal door zijn grooten moed en dapperheid. Zijn gewone zegswijze was: ‘de baas moet vooraan’ en hij bevond zich dan ook altijd in het heetst van den strijd en op de gevaar-
lijkste plaats, zich danig opwindende en (volgens tijdgenooten) met het schuim op den mond, uit wrevel dat hij niet genoeg kon doen. Hij was in den slag bij Fleurus, 1 Juni 1690, maakte den veldtocht van 1702 mede, ook den slag bij Ekeren 27 Juni 1703, waar zijn broeder Feye (6) doodelijk werd gewond en werd na dien slag op den 27 Juli 1703 bevorderd tot kolonel-titulair in het regiment van den luit.-generaal van Coehoorn. Hij was daarna in de veldtochten van 1704 en 05, bij den slag bij Ramilies 1706 en in den bloedigen slag bij Malplaquet 11 Sept. 1709, waar hij driemaal gewond werd, aan welke wonden hij bezweken is. Bijna stervende, gaf hij nog zijn bevelen en sprak zijn soldaten moed in. Toen men hem van de plaats wilde dragen, zeide hij: ‘Vechten kan ik niet meer, maar u verlaten, nooit bij mijn leven; de baas blijft vooraan!’ Hij stierf ongehuwd.
