Romke Jellema en zijn zoon Piet Jellema werkten in de oorlogsjaren mee aan Het LAATSTE NIEUWS, een illegale uitgave in Amsterdam.. Door P. Jellema werd in de zomer van 1944 een getypt nieuwsbulletin vervaardigd ten behoeve van de bewoners van de Amstelveenseweg en omgeving (Zuid- en West-Amsterdam). Eind oktober 1944 werd een stencilpost van DE VRIJHEID (zie nr. 1052) in de woning van de familie Jellema ondergebracht en werd het gehele gezin ingeschakeld bij de vervaardiging van dit blad; de architect R. Jellema ontwierp o.a. verschillende koppen ervoor. De laatste weken voor de bevrijding vervaardigde P. Jellema, nu met de toevoeging 'uitgave DE VRIJHEID', weer HET LAATSTE NIEUWS.
