Naast de Sint-Sebastiaangilden die zorgden voor ontspanning, maar die ook een aantal godsdienstige praktijken kenden, vinden we in bijna elke parochie de religieuze confrèries of broederschappen. Deze verenigingen speelden eeuwen lang een rol in het dagelijks leven, vooral in de Roomse kerk en zij stonden open voor alle standen. De leden moeten een diepe godsvrucht betonen.
Vele confrèries hadden een bijzonder altaar in de kerk, zij hadden hun eigen vaandel en namen ook deel aan de processies of ommegangen. Na de oorlog 1914-1918 zijn veel van die verenigingen verdwenen.
Doel van de broederschap was een voorbereiding op een goede dood via een deugdzaam leven, dit om de hemel te verwerven. In de Broederschap waren ‘lichtdragende broeders’’,waarvan het aantal volgens reglement beperkt werd, en ‘weldoende broeders en zusters’, die allen een toetredingsgeld en een jaarbijdrage betaalden, verbonden in de regel één dag per week uit te kiezen om die in godsvruchtige oefeningen door te brengen, elk volgens zijn godsvrucht en vermogen, en die oefeningen op te dragen tot lafenis der zielen.
