Gf. v. Cappenberg 1106, Gottfried begegnete in Köln dem Hl. Norbert, der um 1120 zu Premontrè in Frankreich ein Kloster gegründet hatte. Gottfried begeisterte sich so für das neue Ordensideal der "Prämonstratenser", daß er 1122 zusammen mit seinem Bruder Otto seine väterliche Burg Cappenberg Norbert zur Gründung einer Niederlassung seines neuen Ordens übergab. Obgleich Gottfrieds Schwiegervater (Friedrich I. Graf von Arnsberg) alles tat, diese Gründung zu verhindern, trat Gottfried im Jahre 1124 im Einvernehmen mit seiner Gattin Jutta in den neuen Orden ein. Er empfing die Priesterweihe und wurde wenig später Vorsteher aller deutschen Ordensniederlassungen. Er starb auf einer Visitationsreise. Seine Reliquien ruhen teils in Cappenberg, teils in Ilbenstadt
