Notes about Benjamin van de Velde

Na een opleiding aan het Nederlands-Israëlitisch Seminarium en een studie theologie en letteren in Leiden keerde hij in 1876 terug naar het nederlands-Israëlitisch Seminarium als leraar hebreeuws. Hij zou hier tot aan zijn pensionering in 1922 blijven werken.

Na zijn opleiding aan het Nederlands-Israëlitisch Seminarium liet hij zich in 1867 als student letteren inschrijven bij het Athenaeum Illustre in Amsterdam. Begin 1868 volgde zijn inschrijving als student in Leiden waar hij theologie en letteren studeerde. In augustus 1869 behaalde hij zijn bevoegdheid als predikant en godsdienstleraar.

In de eerste helft van de jaren zeventig was Van der Velde onder andere werkzaam als docent Hebreeuws aan de Talmoed Tora-School Plantage. In 1872 was hij betrokken bij de oprichting van een vereniging voor godsdienstonderwijzers. In deze periode hield hij ook met enige regelmaat gelegenheidspredikaties. Zo sprak hij in 1874 onder andere een rede uit ter gelegenheid van het 25-jarig regeringsjubileum van koning Willem III. In hetzelfde jaar kreeg hij ook een uitnodiging om voor de joodse gemeente van Arnhem een preek te houden. Dit hing waarschijnlijk samen met het feit dat Van der Velde in deze periode overwoog om in Arnhem naar een functie als godsdienstonderwijzer te solliciteren. Over deze kwestie wisselde hij enige brieven met het Arnhemse kerkenraadslid Liepman Prins. Uiteindelijk is de hele kwestie op niets uitgelopen.
