In verpleeghuis Zonnehuis Oostergast in Zuidhorn is op 77-jarige leeftijd oud-melkveehouder Albert Harkema overleden. Hij was de grondlegger van het 'Kerkje van Harkema' dat hij bouwde bij zijn boerenbedrijf in Den Ham. In 1985 begon hij met de bouwwerkzaamheden die dertien jaar in beslag namen.

Harkema die groot liefhebber was van architectuur, verzuimde destijds vergunning aan te vragen voor de bouw van zijn miniatuurkerk. Dat wat reden voor de gemeente Zuidhorn om een jaar lang een bouwstop op te leggen. Maar Harkema was wars van autoriteiten en liet zich ook aan deze maatregel niet al te veel gelegen liggen.

Ook het theehuis dat hij met eigen handen bouwde bij de kerk om bezoekers koffie te laten drinken, verrees aanvankelijk illegaal. In de loop der jaren ontwikkelde de miniatuurkerk zich tot een van de grootste toeristische attracties in de gemeente Zuidhorn. Het kerkje was jarenlang goed voor circa 3000 betalende bezoekers per jaar. Het kerkje is nu in handen van de familie Ykema uit Niezijl.
