Zuster Theresia van de Heilige Drievuldigheid - zoals de kloosternaam van Theresia IJsseldijk luidde - werd op 13 november 1897 in Apeldoorn geboren. Op 2 oktober 1917 trad ze in Tilburg in bij de Karmelitessen van het Goddelijk Hart van Jezus, waar zij op 2 juli 1919 haar professie deed. Samen met zes andere zusters werd ze uitgezonden naar Amerika, waar ze in verschillende huizen van de congregatie werkzaam was tot zij getroffen werd door een nierziekte. Heldhaftig onderging ze haar lijden tot aan haar vroegtijdige dood op 10 maart 1926 in het ziekenhuis van Saint Louis (VS). Zuster Theresia IJsseldijk werd slechts 28 jaar. Ze ligt begraven in het zusterklooster van Wauwatosa, eveneens in Amerika. Al snel na haar dood werden wondertekenen aan haar toegeschreven, waarvan documenten zijn bewaard in het Moederhuis van de congregatie in Sittard.

Hoewel zuster Theresia de laatste zes jaar van haar korte leven in Amerika woonde en daar ook begraven ligt, vindt het zaligverklaringsproces - met goedvinden van de bisschop van Saint Louis - plaats in het bisdom Roermond. Dit onder meer omdat de documenten en bewijsmaterialen - die tot de zaligverklaring zouden kunnen leiden - zich grotendeels in Sittard bevinden, omdat zuster Theresia het grootste deel van haar korte leven in Nederland woonde en omdat de stichteres van de congregatie reeds direct na Theresia's overlijden in 1926 met goedvinden van de toenmalige bisschop van Roermond vanuit Sittard gebedsprentjes van haar liet vervaardigen in diverse talen.

Tientallen jaren was er een bloeiende verering voor zuster Theresia, maar om de zaligverklaring van de stichteres van de zustercongregatie - de in 2006 in Roermond zaligverklaarde Maria Tauscher - voorrang te verlenen, besloot de zustercongregatie in de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw de verering van Theresia te laten rusten. Nu de stichteres is zaligverklaard kan ook de verering van zuster Theresia weer worden opgepakt, zo vinden de zusters, temeer daar zij door de inwoners van Apeldoorn en Enschede - waar zij voor haar intreden woonde - kan worden gezien als "iemand van hen". Een nicht van zuster Theresia, die haar gekend heeft, woont nog in Enschede. Volgens generaaloverste Angelina Finell kan zuster Theresia door haar ziekte, haar korte leven en haar moedig gedragen lijden de mensen helpen om een antwoord op de zin van het lijden te vinden.
