Jacob wordt in de bronnen ook Jacob Backer of Jacob Willems genoemd, hij was waarschijnlijk boer en mogelijk ook bakker. Hij trouwde drie maal, er zijn alleen kinderen uit het laatste huwelijk bekend.
Hij doet af en toe zaken met de diaconie. Zo koopt hij enkele malen graan van de diaconie. De diaconie ontving nogal eens graan als betaling en verkocht dit dan weer door. Ook ontvangt hij vergoeding voor huishuur ten behoeve van Anne Jans en de weduwe van Evert Peters die bij hem in woonden en het zelf niet konden betalen. Bedragen werden in die tijd genoteerd in guldens, stuivers en penningen, 1 gulden = 20 stuivers, 1 stuiver = 16 penningen.
Trijntje Willems is al getrouwd als ze met pasen 1714 als lidmaat wordt aangenomen, ze woont met Jacob op de Grampel, later als weduwe aan de Rijnsteeg. Al hun kinderen worden in Bennekom gedoopt behalve Evert.
