Notes about Otto de la Roche (Heer van Athene en van Ray)

Otto was een Bourgondisch edelman van het kasteel La Roche-sur-l'Ognon, in Rigney in Franche-Comté.
Zijn ouders waren Pons van La Roche en Mathelie.
Door het huwelijk met zijn nicht Isabella van Ray, werd hij heer van Ray. Otto nam deel aan de vierde kruistocht in 1204 en werd de eerste hertog van Ahene. Hij nam de titel aan van megaskyr, of grootheer, in Athene en plaatste zijn bezittingen onder bescherming van de koning van Thessalonica.
Otto versterkte de Acropolis en nam in 1208 de titel aan van hertog.
In 1225 deed hij afstand ten voordele van zijn zoon Otto II en keerde terug naar Bourgondië.
Zijn dochter Margaretha huwde met Hendrik I van Vaudémont.
