Notes about Arjen "Arjen" Klazes Sjollema

Arjen Klazes Sjollema werkte tot zijn huwelijk op de boerderij van zijn vader. Daarna werkte hij enige jaren als boerenarbeider o.a. bij zijn vader tot hij in 1902 boer werd op "Groot-Blijma" (Syteburen bij Grouw) als opvolger van zijn broer Ate. Toen deze pachtboerderij in 1909 werd verkocht, werd Arjen boer op de sate "Hoflandstra" (Hofland bij Grouw). In 1924 werd de pacht van deze boerderij niet verlengd. Arjen hiels boelgoed en ging "stil leven" in Grouw. Hij was toen zeer aktief in het maatschappelijk leven, o.a. als bestuurslid van diverse organisaties en gemeenteraadslid. (Bron: Leeuwarden). Arjen was een goede boer en bekwaam veefokker. Zijn vee gaf veel melk met een hoog vetgehalte, hij was zijn collega's hierin jaren vooruit. (Zijn vader had niet veel om vee gegeven.) Toen hij op 52-jarige leeftijd ging rentenieren, wijdde hij zich geheel aan het maatschappelijk leven. Hij was o.a. jarenlang lid van de gemeenteraad, bestuurslid van de Gemeentelijk bouwvereniging en van het Groene Kruis. Hij bevorderde de lichamelijke opvoeding, was secretaris van het Bestuur der Coöperatieve Zuivelfabriek te Grouw en had nog andere functies als penningmeester of secretaris in diverse commissies.
