William Nichols
Retired Lt. Colonel William C. Nichols, age 83, of Fort Washington, Md., died Saturday, June 21, 2003 after an extended battle with cancer.
Bill, who was born Feb. 6, 1920 in Hamilton, Mont., grew up in Lynden. A 1938 graduate, Bill excelled in tennis and basketball at Lynden High School and enjoyed occasional participation there in school plays.
Following high school, Bill began a 28-year career in the military. A graduate of Officer Candidate School, Bill served in the 509th Bomb Squadron, 351st Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force during World War II, and later led reconstruction efforts in post-war occupied Japan. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and then went on to receive many honors during his years of service in the Air Force: a citation from the Defense Atomic Support Agency in 1961, the Air Force Commendation Medal in 1965, and the Legion of Merit in 1968.
Following his retirement from the Air Force, Bill worked as manager of contracts and grants in the University of Maryland physics department. Although he retired from the universityin December 1981, Bill remained an avid Terrapin football and basketball fan and attended games for many years.
Bill is survived by his wife, Deanna "Dee" of Fort Washington, Md., and his sister, Pansy Taylor of Oak Harbor; daughter MaryLee Nichols of Newark, Ohio, daughter Karin Clancy and husband Jim of Pasadena, Md., son Robert Nichols of Waldorf, Md., and daughter Lauri Kemmerling and husband Todd of Ewing, N.J. He is also survived by three nephews, Dr. Jack Taylor of Baltimore, Md., Dr. Ross Taylor and Larry Taylor of Seattle, their wives and children. Bill also enjoyed the company of his six grandchildren, Sean Applegate of Spotsylvania, Va., Casey Applegate and Megan Hallam of Newark, Ohio, Tyler and Jared Kemmerling of Ewing, N.J., and Shannon Clancy of Pasadena, Md. Bill was also blessed with six great-grandchildren and many special friends and neighbors.
