Name Suffix: King Of The Burgundians "Succeeded with his brother Godigisel as sole rulers of the Burgundians. In 500, Clovis I, King of the Franks, defeated him with the help of Godigisel. This battle was followed by more betweenthe two brothers. Gundobad, after killing Godigisel while in an Arian church, then assumed both an alliance with the Franks and sole leadership of Burgundy. He died in 516 at peace with the four Frankish kings, and was succeeded by his son Sigismund."

The nephew of the barbarian emperor-maker Ricimer, Gundobad briefly held the supreme military command in the Roman service. In 473 he emulated his uncle when he himself placed a puppet, Glycerius, on the throne of Ravenna, but the subsequent deposition of Glycerius by Julius Nepos, the appointee of the eastern emperor, sent Gundobad fleeing back to his Burgundians. After becoming joint ruler (with his brothers) of the Burgundians, he murdered his brother Chilperic; the latter's daughter, Clotilda, later (c. 493) married the Frankish king Clovis. In 500 Gundobad fought off a Frankish attack and killed another brother, Godegisel, who had brought it about.

Though formally an Arian, Gundobad was in fact a secret Catholic sympathizer and enjoyed good relations with the orthodox clergy, as with the Romans in general over whom he ruled. The most important act of Gundobad's reign in Burgundy was his promulgation, early in the 6th century, of two codes of law, the Lex Gundobada, applying to all his subjects, and, somewhat later, the Lex Romana Burgundionum, applying to his Roman subjects.

FMG: He succeeded his father in 473 as Gondebaud King of Burgundy, with his capital at Geneva.  He put to death his three brothers and conquered their lands.  Clovis King of the Franks, allied with Godegisel, attacked Gondebaud in [500] [Gregory of Tours II.27-43].  Gregory of Tours records that Gundobad ruled jointly with his brother Godegisel "over the territory round the Rhône and the Saône and the province of Marseille", but was put to flight by Clovis King of the Franks after his brother defected, and took refuge in Avignon [Gregory of Tours II.32, pp. 145-7.].  After making an initial payment of tribute to the Franks, he rebelled, stormed Vienne where his brother Godegisel was killed, and reasserted his independence.
